Frequently Asked Questions
- Self-hosted Umami has no per-event price; you pay for the VPS plan. On Umami Cloud, every pageview and every stored event property counts as one event. Stack 4 is $8.99/mo for your first 3 months, then $15.99/mo, with Umami 3.2.0 and PostgreSQL 15 pre-installed.
- Umami's answer is no: its docs say the tracking code sets no cookies, and its homepage says most sites can drop the banner entirely. That is Umami's claim, not legal advice from us. Not everyone agrees; one GitHub user argues consent is still required under ePrivacy rules.
- Umami is pre-installed: Umami 3.2.0, PostgreSQL 15, and Caddy, with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested at first boot. Then SSH in, run sudo cat /root/.umami_credentials for your admin login, change the password, add a website, and paste the tracking script into your site's <head>.
- Umami publishes no RAM or CPU minimum. It requires Node.js 18.18+ and PostgreSQL 12.14+, and one self-hoster who asked for sizing found none in the docs or issues. Any plan we point you to is DreamHost's guidance, not Umami's. Start with the plan that fits the sites you track today.
- Umami Cloud is the hosted version Umami sells, in four tiers. Hobby is $0 for 100K events a month and 1 website; Pro is $20/mo for 1 million events and up to 20 websites. Goals, funnels, journeys, revenue, and attribution are on every tier and in the self-hosted build; session replay and heatmaps start at Cloud's $200/mo Business tier. Self-hosted has no per-event price, and you run the backups.
- PostgreSQL only. Umami v3 removed MySQL support, so PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer is required. The DreamHost image runs PostgreSQL 15 in its own container next to Umami, with no database port open to the internet.
- In one PostgreSQL database on your server, holding your accounts, sites, and events. On the standard launch there is no separate volume, so it lives on the root disk. umami-backup writes a pg_dump to that same disk; nothing copies it off the server for you, so do that yourself.
- You do, when you run umami-update. The image pins Umami 3.2.0; upstream is v3.3.1 (20 Aug 2026), and 3.3.0 added two-factor login and Docker runtime-image CVE fixes the 3.2.0 image predates. umami-update pulls the newest release, which can be a new major version, and warns that a database migration may be one-way. Take a umami-backup first.
