Frequently Asked Questions
- Run it somewhere other than the box being watched: one agency wrote that hosting Uptime Kuma inside its own infrastructure would take the monitoring down with the services it watches. A common community answer is to keep one free external check pointed at your Uptime Kuma. Multi-location probes are an open upstream request.
- In one SQLite database on your server, at /opt/uptime-kuma with the standard launch. Run uptime-kuma-backup for a local archive, then copy it somewhere else yourself — it survives a bad update but not a lost server.
- Only after you add a notification service. A down monitor only shows on the dashboard until you add a service under Settings, Notifications — so set one up before you create monitors. Uptime Kuma's README names Telegram, Discord, Gotify, Slack, Pushover, and email over SMTP among its channels.
- You don't. Uptime Kuma comes pre-installed on Debian 13 with HTTPS working, the database already chosen, and your admin account created before the page can even be reached. Your login is in /root/.uptime_kuma_credentials.
- One is software you run, the other a service you rent. UptimeRobot's free plan is 50 monitors at five-minute checks, SSL monitoring is paid-only, and its Free and Solo plans include zero login seats. Uptime Kuma's README advertises checks as often as every 20 seconds. The server starts at $8.99/mo for your first 3 months.
- Uptime Kuma publishes no minimum. Its README, install wiki, and troubleshooting wiki state no RAM or CPU figure, and third-party pages invent numbers that disagree with each other. Any plan we suggest is our own guidance, and we say so.
- The software is MIT-licensed, and the project sells no hosted tier — it is funded through GitHub Sponsors and Open Collective. What you pay for is the server it runs on, from $8.99/mo for your first 3 months, then $15.99/mo.
- You do. uptime-kuma-update pulls the :2 tag, so it stays inside 2.x and cannot cross a major version. It takes no backup of its own: the script says run uptime-kuma-backup first. Debian security updates install themselves; the container does not. Upstream's migration guide says back up the data directory, three times over.
