Frequently Asked Questions
- Two bills. The server is the one you pay us — from $8.99/mo for your first 3 months. The models bill through your own provider keys: the Anthropic, OpenAI, and Gemini key fields ship empty for you to fill in, and Paperclip estimates $20 to $100+ a month for an active agent team.
- Paperclip's installation guide says any Linux VPS with 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM is enough to get started; its README publishes no minimum at all. Agent CLIs run as child processes in the same container, and Paperclip suggests separate machines past a handful of busy agents.
- Not here. Paperclip's own VPS guide runs ten numbered steps, ending in a hand-written Nginx config and a Certbot run. Here it comes pre-installed on Debian 13, with the Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Gemini CLIs already inside.
- The Paperclip server has to be up for a scheduled wakeup to fire — its README says agents run on scheduled heartbeats and event triggers, not continuously. A community answer puts it plainly: the server runs on a machine that stays on. Both containers restart unless you stop them.
- They pause Paperclip, not your provider's billing. Paperclip warns you at 80% and stops the agent at 100%. One gap, raised in its own community: an agent that reports token counts without dollar costs shows zero spend. So use budgets as the control they are, and keep an eye on your provider dashboard too.
- In one folder — /opt/paperclip on the standard launch. The database, agent workspaces, and file storage all live there together. Run paperclip-backup for an archive, then copy it off the server yourself.
- You still need them — Paperclip says agents bring their own prompts, models, and runtimes. It ships ten built-in adapters, including Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini, and the container we pin already has the Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Gemini CLIs installed.
- One admin account is created at first boot, and signups are closed before the site is reachable. To add someone, set PAPERCLIP_AUTH_DISABLE_SIGN_UP=false in .env, run docker compose up -d, have them join, then set it back. Paperclip says one deployment can run many companies with data isolation.
