Frequently Asked Questions
- Your plan's disk is the ceiling: 75 GB on Stack 4, 150 GB on Stack 8, 250 GB on Stack 16, and 450 GB on Stack 32. Immich says thumbnails and transcoded video add 10–20% on top of your originals, and its PostgreSQL files typically run 1–3 GB. Watch df -h before a large first backup.
- You do. Immich's README asks every user to follow a 3-2-1 backup plan for their photos and videos, and its docs say its automatic database backups hold metadata only, never photos. The immich-backup helper dumps the database and prints that you must copy the library directory off the server separately.
- Immich's docs say 6 GB of RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended, with 2 CPU cores minimum and 4 recommended. On a 4 GB system, Immich says it can run with machine learning turned off — and adds that disabling it gives a poor experience for search and the Explore page. Stack 8 has 8 GB.
- Yes. Immich is open source under AGPL-3.0, and its docs say all features will be free forever with nothing behind a paywall. Optional lifetime product keys cost $25 for one user or $100 for a whole server. You pay us for the server: $8.99/mo for your first 3 months, then $15.99/mo.
- No VPN or tunnel. The image's Caddy config requests a Let's Encrypt certificate for your server's IP address, and CI asserts the issuer on a booted test VM. Immich itself recommends a trusted certificate over its experimental self-signed support, which it says often breaks upload, download, and video playback.
- Through Google Takeout, using a third-party tool. Immich's docs recommend the community-maintained immich-go for Takeout imports — there is no built-in importer, and Immich's own command-line tool only uploads files and checks the server version. Neither Immich nor DreamHost supports immich-go.
- You choose when to update. The immich-update helper warns that Immich releases can include breaking changes and irreversible database migrations, then pauses before pulling. Immich says downgrading is not supported even within a minor version, and that it does not backport patches. Run immich-backup for the database first.
- It is your server, your accounts, and your database, and Immich does not modify your original files. It is also a shared server: anyone you invite gets an account and uses your storage. And take Immich at its word — its docs say the project is under very active development and severe security vulnerabilities cannot be ruled out.
