What is Log File Analysis?

Log file analysis is the practice of examining the log files where a web server or content delivery network (CDN) records each request it receives, to see how search engine bots and visitors access a site. For SEO, it shows which URLs crawlers request, how often they return, and which errors, redirects, or slow server responses they encounter.

Log file analysis reveals how a website is being crawled by search engine bots. For instance, it can show you which pages get crawled most often and which are overlooked. That gap matters because of crawl budget: crawl time spent on duplicate, parameter, or otherwise unimportant URLs is budget wasted, and it delays how quickly the pages you care about get discovered and re-crawled. Google’s crawl budget documentation names that wasted inventory as the factor site owners can control the most.

Logs also flag pages with slow server response times. That’s the time the server takes to answer a request, not the full page load a visitor experiences, and it carries a direct SEO cost: when response times degrade or the server returns 5xx errors, Google lowers the site’s crawl capacity limit and crawls less.

How to do log file analysis

First, get the logs. You can download them from your host’s control panel or with an FTP client. At DreamHost, error and access logs have been built into the panel since June 2, 2025: go to Manage Websites, click Manage for your domain, and open the Logs tab, where you can filter by status code and time range. Wherever your logs live, export them promptly. Servers rotate logs to save space, so check your host’s retention policy before the window you need is overwritten.

A four-step workflow for SEO log file analysis: export the server access logs, verify which requests come from genuine search engine bots, identify crawl patterns such as wasted crawl budget, errors, and redirect chains, then fix the underlying causes and re-check the logs in a repeating cycle.

Next, isolate verified search engine bots. Every request in an access log carries a user agent string, but anything can claim to be Googlebot, so use a tool that verifies bots instead of taking the string at face value. Then look for the patterns that trigger action:

  • Googlebot spending most of its hits on parameter or duplicate URLs: fix the cause first. Remove unneeded internal links to those URLs and get your canonical URLs right. Save your robots.txt file for paths crawlers genuinely don’t need to access at all: once blocked, a URL can’t show crawlers its canonical or noindex signals.
  • 404s that keep getting re-crawled: fix the internal links pointing at them, or redirect the old URL to its replacement.
  • Redirect chains: every extra hop spends a request, so update links to point at the final URL.
  • A key section no bot has visited in weeks: strengthen internal links to it and make sure it’s in your XML sitemap.
  • Bot-hit URLs that aren’t in your sitemap: orphan or accidental pages to integrate, redirect, or remove.
  • Response times creeping up or 5xx errors climbing: a server problem to fix before it costs you crawl capacity.

One blind spot to know about: if your site runs behind a CDN, requests answered from the CDN’s edge cache never reach your origin server, so origin access logs undercount both bots and visitors. For the complete picture, pull the CDN’s own logs too.

Log file analysis vs. Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats report

You don’t always need raw logs. Google gives every verified site owner a free crawl summary, and the two sources answer different needs:

  • Server logs record every request that reaches the server, from every bot and visitor, URL by URL. Complete and independent of Google, but you need server access and an analysis tool.
  • The Crawl Stats report is free inside Google Search Console and needs no server access, but its data is aggregated and sampled, and it only covers Google’s own crawlers.

Start with Crawl Stats. Move to log file analysis when you need URL-level detail, evidence about bots other than Google’s, or proof of a specific technical problem.

When log file analysis is worth it

For most small sites, it isn’t a routine task. Google aims its crawl budget guidance at three kinds of sites: large sites (1 million+ unique pages) with content that changes about weekly, medium sites (10,000+ unique pages) with content that changes daily, and sites where Search Console reports a large share of URLs as “Discovered - currently not indexed.” Google calls those numbers rough estimates, not exact thresholds. If your pages get crawled the same day you publish them, skip the log deep-dive: keep your sitemap current and check the Page Indexing report in Search Console instead.
