The drop list, also known as the auction list, is filled with expired domains pending deletion. These domains are added to the drop list after their owners fail to renew their registration and when the grace periods expire. Once domains are added to the drop list, they are auctioned to the highest bidder.

Drop lists often contain anywhere from a day to several weeks’ worth of expired domains. They may also consist of domains still in the grace period or ones that have already expired. For this reason, domainers often employ organizational software to help sort through their options.
