How to Enable DreamShield Malware Remover
Malware is everywhere. Each day, over 350,000 new malicious programs see the light of day. That malware comes in all shapes and sizes, and it can range from “annoying” to “site-breaking.” Knowing how to detect and remove it is key to keeping your website and its users safe.
If you're using a reputable web host, fortunately, malware shouldn't be a big issue. With any of our managed hosting plans, you’ll get access to the DreamShield Malware Remover add-on, which can help you detect and deal with malware files before they become a serious problem. Let's go over how malware removers work and how you can enable DreamShield!
What a Malware Remover Is (And How It Can Help You)
You're probably familiar with the concept of anti-virus software. Malware removers are similar, but they're equipped to deal with a wider variety of threats.
There are hundreds of types of malicious programs that can infect and hurt websites. Some malware will plant ads on your pages, others hijack links, while still more will exploit your website for black-hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO) purposes.
- Negatively impacting the user experience
- Causing search engines to warn visitors away
- Slowing down your website
Any single one of those issues is enough to slow down your site's growth. That means it's in your best interest to learn how to prevent and remove malware from your website.
With DreamShield, you get weekly full-site scans and reports that tell you if any known malware file has managed to worm its way past your defenses. If worse comes to worst, DreamShield helps you remove that malware file so you can return your website to pristine condition.
What’s more, DreamShield will also check if common web applications are up to date, fix insecure file permissions, and even verify if HTTPS is enabled!
How to Enable DreamShield Malware Remover
As we mentioned before, DreamShield is an individual add-on that you can enable on any of our managed hosting plans. First, let's go over how to set it up if you're just signing up for shared hosting. Then we'll discuss how to activate it if you're already a DreamHost user.
Activate DreamShield Malware Remover on New Accounts
When signing up for hosting with DreamHost, you’ll get to decide whether you’d like to register a new domain, transfer an existing domain, or choose one later.
Enabling DreamShield works the same regardless of which option you choose, so let's go with Choose a domain later.
On the next screen, you can select your payment method, set an email for your account, and pick any add-ons you want to enable from the get-go.
For now, the only add-on we care about is DreamShield Protection.
Keep in mind that this add-on will cost you an extra $3 per month. That's pretty cheap for weekly scans, reports, and help cleaning up your website in a worst-case scenario, however!
Once you enable DreamShield, you can proceed with the rest of the checkout process. That's it!
Enable DreamShield Malware Remover for Existing DreamHost Users
If you're already a DreamHost user, you can enable DreamShield on any of your existing domains from within your hosting panel.
First, log in to your panel and access the Domains > Manage Domains tab. Inside, you'll find a list of all your hosted domains.
If you look closely under the Security tab, you'll notice that some of your domains include an option that says Add Malware Remover.
Clicking on that setting will send you to another page, where you can read more about DreamShield and activate it for that specific domain.
If you don't see the option to enable DreamShield under some of your domains, it's because you're using a DreamHost subdomain. To set up DreamShield, you'll need to assign a regular domain name to that website.
These days, search engines will go as far as to warn you if you're about to visit an “infected” website. That means you need to be proactive about keeping your own site clean unless you want to scare visitors away.
If you're DreamHost user, you can enable the DreamShield Malware Remover add-on at any time for your website. Once it's on, it will scan your site weekly, and send you reports with results and instructions on what to do if it finds anything fishy.
If you're not a DreamHost user yet, check out our shared hosting plans, which enable you to get a website up and running in a matter of hours!
