Introducing the DreamShield (formerly Malware Remover)

Introducing the DreamShield (formerly Malware Remover) thumbnail

DreamHost offers several ways to help you keep your website safe (Web Application Firewalls, grsecurity kernels, Let’s Encrypt Certificates, and more), and today we’re continuing that trend by offering our DreamShield to you. The Malware Remover is another piece in a layered defense that helps to keep your website protected.

The DreamShield Malware Remover is actually software we originally wrote for ourselves. We needed more powerful tools to help keep our machines safe, and realizing there wasn’t really anything out there that could do exactly what we wanted, we made our own. As you might imagine — being the home for over 1.5 million websites — we’ve seen more than a few pieces of malware end up on customer websites.

This unfortunate fact, however, helps us know what to look for when we perform these weekly scans on your behalf, and because the internet is a scary place, we’re seeing new things every day. Weekly scans for malicious code, out of date software, and bad file permissions help you defend what is yours. We’re not done with the Malware Remover either — we’re still tweaking it and writing new features all the time.

The Nightmare Labs team is excited to offer the Malware Remover to our customers, and we hope it makes a positive impact on the security and integrity of your website.

  1. The Free Malware Removal Tool which I am assuming uses ClamAV as a basic scanning engine? Also the scanning engine does it detect out of date software such as WordPress and the plugins or just the CMS because there is value in testing for both the latter being more difficult though.

    1. Scott!

The Malware Removal Tool is a 100% new engine made in house. It uses signatures sourced from malware DreamHost has collected over the past 7+ years and is constantly updated as new threats emerge for our customers.

At this time we only detect for the CMS’ themselves. We really want to do plug-in version scanning as that often is a major source of compromise. However at this early release time we haven’t conquered that challenge yet. We know that trying to get full coverage of plug-ins (there are so many hundreds of thousands!) is a futile task, but some of the most common WordPress, Joomla, etc ones are within reach.

  2. So if I’m reading the Help page correctly the removal of any found Malware has to be done by yourself? By following some instructions/links in an email?

    Is that correct?

  3. Wow, interesting. Might have to consider trying out DreamHost. Read mixed things… but this is a compelling reason if this Malware Software works.

  4. Activated Malware Remover, curious when the “beta period” ends – mentioned above the Start scanning button.
