What is First Contentful Paint?

First Contentful Paint (FCP) is the first part of a website to render visually within the browser. It is one of several metrics that you can use to measure site performance.

More About First Contentful Paint

FCP is one of Google’s Core Web Vitals metrics that seek to measure how loading times impact the user experience. This metric lets you calculate how long it takes for visitors to see the first elements load on one of your pages.

Higher FCP times often translate to poor website performance. The longer it takes for the first site elements to become visible, the longer it will take for the page to load in its entirety.

According to Google, excellent FCP scores fall within 0-1.8 seconds. Any longer than that, and your website or its server might need performance adjustments.

Keep in mind that FCP doesn’t paint a complete picture of website performance. The Core Web Vitals also include two other metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and First Input Delay (FID).
