How to Start a Blog with DreamHost
Choose a Plan
The first step in getting set up with a blog is to choose what hosting plan you would like. Above are two plans recommended by Ryan for a first timer setting up a blog. Once you have decided on your plan, you will be asked to register a domain name.
Choose What You Want to Blog About
When registering a domain, you will want to think about what your blog will be about and what you will want to name it. It is not only important to choose something you are passionate about when deciding on what to blog about, but it is also to find your niche within that subject. Finding a niche will set you apart from other blogs that are similar. It is always important to research what other people are already blogging about.
Register a Domain
Once you have decided on what you want to blog about, and what you are going to name your blog, you will want to register your domain name. If you want, you can also choose to skip this step and think more on it. If the domain name that you choose is already taken, you can explore other options such as a shortened name (ryrob.com) or even a different TLD (emmylou.club).
Once you have registered your domain, your next step will be to check out, pay for your new hosting plan and domain name. On this page, you will also be able to choose some paid and free add-ons. It is recommended to install WordPress at this time using the option along the left hand side. It is also recommended to set up DreamShield at this time to keep your blog up to date and protected. If you chose the Shared Starter plan, you will also have the option to add an email address to the domain.
Design Your Blog
Once you have completed the checkout and if you chose to install WordPress during checkout, you will receive an email with further instructions on how to login to your new WordPress site. There are many free themes to start designing your site, as well as paid themes that often include extra features. This is only the first start, and if you haven’t finished reading Ryan’s full post on starting a blog, we highly recommend you check it out here.
