What is a Category?

In WordPress, users with the power to create and publish blog posts can also assign them a ‘category’. This classification groups them with other blog posts that discuss similar topics.

More About Categories

While most blogs organize posts in reverse chronological order, many also have a dropdown menu of categories in the navigation bar. These classifications can make it easier for readers to explore a blog’s content.

Only users with the role of Editor or Administrator can manage categories. However, Authors and Contributors can assign pre-existing categories to their posts before publishing or saving them. Furthermore, they can assign multiple categories to a single post.

By default, categories are enabled, but they can be disabled on your Posts page under Screen Options. In addition to categories, you can also give blog posts ‘tags’, which can further assist users in finding their desired content.
