Welcome to May!
Ah yes, May.
What can one say about May that hasn't already been said?
Well here's some fast facts about May that you MAY not have considered!
• Has three letters!
In addition, I MAY have had some trouble coming up with a good introduction for this month's newsletter.
ECommerce Made Easy with CafeCommerce
Setting up an online shopping cart is something that MAY have caused you a fair amount of confusion in the past.
In fact, if you've ever tried, you've probably given up.
Web-based shopping carts have never been particularly easy-to-use "under the hood." Their administration systems have often been slow, unwieldy, and just plain confusing.
They also - and this is most baffling part - tend to have punitive pricing structures. Once you start making a lot of sales or growing your inventory above a prescribed number, your shopping cart expense goes up - WAY up. Before you know it, you've had to raise prices across the board on your handmade cat sweaters to make up the difference.
We were approached by our friends at WebAssist a few months back to team up to help change the landscape of ECommerce. They dangled the carrot of an easy-to-use, fixed-price, GUI-empowered shopping cart in front of our face, and what can I say? We love carrots.
Our developers spent a few months working alongside their developers to give life to a comprehensive, easy-to-use e-commerce system that's both affordable and designed from the ground-up to specifically work well with our servers.
The result? CafeCommerce. Tour its features at:
CafeCommerce is FREE! ...for the first two weeks.
If their free trial doesn't satisfy you, simply cancel and you'll owe nothing for CafeCommerce service.
But you won't. I know you. You just won't. You'll be SO impressed and relieved by the depth and power of CafeCommerce's feature set that you'll be happy to pay the $21.05 per month that it costs to add CafeCommerce to any existing DreamHost hosting plan.
And then you will be rich.
We Made The List: WorldBlu 2011 & WorldBlu Live
We're happy to announce that we've been named to the WorldBlu list of Most Democratic Workplaces for 2011!
We're in good company this year sitting alongside 51 other organizations including Zappos, Groupon, Hulu, and more!
Quoting Traci Fenton, WorldBlu's founder:
"Organizational democracy is a system of organization that is based on freedom, instead of fear and control. It's a way of designing organizations to amplify the possibilities of human potential — and the organization as a whole."
And it's true. Speaking as a human, my potential has never felt more amplified. In fact some times I feel so ragingly amplified around here that I think I might just explode and leave the office covered in a crisp film of democracy, truth, freedom, empowerment, and guts.
But BEFORE I exploded, I would be sure to solicit feedback from the rest of my organization in a manner that would allow all voices to be heard as to whether or not my explosion would be in the best interests of the company.
That's the democratic way, you see.
We are still hiring, too. I honestly don't think that will ever end:
We make for pretty good coworkers, in case you were wondering. We're interesting-looking people, anyway...
This is the fourth year in a row that we've been named to the WorldBlu list and we just don't get tired of mentioning it. After all, if we can't toot our own horn, who will do the tooting for us? So toot we must.
I recommend you book an exit row now because we will be tooting all the way up to San Francisco later this month where we'll be attending WorldBlu Live:
The speakers and sessions at WorldBlu Live are always interesting, so you should probably go, too.
We can meet up for drinks after. Hit a movie. Maybe play some cards? I'm partial to miniature golf, myself.
If you'd like to meet up, a quick email to email@example.com is all it takes!
Meet us at Interop
We'll also be at Interop in Las Vegas this month from the 8th through the 12th.
Interop's "focus" is on advances made in cloud computing, virtualization, security, mobility, data center, and networking technology.
It's basically a full IT buffet with something for everybody - even those gluten-free sad sacks who can only eat dirt and mysterious pills that are only sold at health food stores.
If you'd like to set up a meeting with us during Interop, firstname.lastname@example.org is again your best bet!
We Support The Ada Initiative
First, a quick refresher on humans:
• Women are good.
So it's weird that whenever we need to hire anyone for anything tech-related, the ratio of applicants is literally TEN men to every one woman.
Participation in open-source projects in particular is predominantly male and there's just no good reason for that.
The Ada Initiative exists to change this sad state of affairs.
"The Ada Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing participation of women in open technology and culture."
We're proud to announce that we're an angel investor in The Ada Initiative.
The Ada Initiative's namesake is Ada Lovelace, widely recognized as the world's first computer programmer who, as it turns out, just happened to be a lady.
DreamHost 101: Anti-Spam Tools
Spam has been a problem on the Internet for as long as I can remember.
And yet, here we are in 2011 and spam is still around. We're all used to it by now, but it hasn't gotten any less irritating.
The good news is that we offer an optional (and free!) spam blocking service that relies on three key blocklists that combine their powers (usually in a two-second ceremony during which fists are bumped and beams of light shoot out of rings) to prevent offers of prescription medication, toner cartridges, mortgage refinance offers, and online casinos from ever reaching your inbox.
Spam filtering can be applied on a per-domain basis, affecting each and every email address associated with any given domain that you host with us. Just turn it on!
Suspected junk mail is placed in a 'junkmail' folder which is only visible from within your webmail interface, so you'll want to check in there from time to time to ensure you're not missing out on anything important.
These filters are powerful and aggressive, so use them with caution!
You can also use this tool to set up custom whitelists and blacklists for your known friends and enemies to be automatically acknowledged and ignored, respectively!
Spam filtering! It's the hot new thing!
That was a joke you goofballs!
Sorry for the heart attack last month. Just to clarify a few points:
We have not sold the company.
We are not switching to cPanel.
While both our newsletter and the blog post explained - quite explicitly - that it was an April Fool's joke, once panic sets in people tend to stop reading and start running around like their hair is on fire.
The panicked and outraged emails, tweets, and phone calls were all appreciated, however. It shows how much you care! We are privileged to have such passionate customers.
Your heated outrage and furious indignation warmed our hearts.
DreamHost Sites Of The Month! (DHSOTMs!)
As voted by you, the winners from APRIL are as follows...
Congratulations to the winners!
Don't forget to cast your votes (and enter your own site) for the next round of DHSOTMs at
See ya next month!
So long for now,
