On one side are the React veterans, and on the other are Svelte users.

Which side are you on?

Well, React has been the top framework for years. However, Svelte is definitely changing things. It offers a new way to build user interfaces.

The State of JS 2025 survey (published February 2026) shows React is still the most used front-end framework — 85% of developers have used it. React offers mature tooling, a huge selection of libraries, and a far larger pool of developers who know it, making it the safer choice for large, complex applications.

What is React?

React is a well-established JavaScript library created by Facebook in 2013. It lets you write HTML-like code within your JavaScript, simplifying the creation and management of your components’ structures.

Virtual DOM: React employs a virtual DOM, a simplified version of the actual DOM. When changes need to happen, React updates the virtual DOM first. It then calculates the best way to update the actual DOM and applies those changes. This process reduces unnecessary redraws and improves performance.

Component-based architecture: React promotes a component-based approach. You can break down your application into reusable components, each with its own state and rendering logic. This structure makes your code easier to maintain and understand.

Unidirectional data flow: React follows a unidirectional data flow. Data flows from parent components to child components through props. This predictable data flow makes debugging and understanding your application’s state much easier.

What is Svelte?

Rich Harris created Svelte, a modern JavaScript framework that builds user interfaces in a unique way. The name is literal: “svelte” means slim and graceful, and the framework earns it. Unlike frameworks like React, Svelte does most of its work during a compilation step, so your apps run faster and use fewer files.

The official Svelte GitHub repo boasts an impressive 87.7k stars (as of August 2026).

Svelte currently powers 0.2% of websites whose JavaScript library is known, per W3Techs (August 2026).

Its popularity has skyrocketed, especially since adding TypeScript support. Runes replaced the old assignment-based reactivity with something more predictable, while keeping boilerplate minimal.

Scoped CSS: Svelte lets you write CSS styles only for specific components. These styles are automatically scoped to the component, preventing style conflicts and making your CSS easier to understand. Bundle size

The size of your JavaScript bundle directly affects how fast your web application loads. A smaller bundle means faster loading, especially on mobile devices or slower internet connections.

Svelte creates small bundles by default. It does this by working hard during the compilation process, transforming your Svelte code into highly optimized vanilla JavaScript instead of shipping a framework runtime to the browser.

React uses a runtime library (react plus react-dom) that you need to include in your bundle. Every React application starts with that baseline of framework code before your own components even load.

How does that play out as an app grows? A 2019 community analysis of Svelte 3 and React 16 measured real-world projects and derived these formulas for how bundle sizes scale:

Svelte: Bundle Bytes = 0.493 * Source Code Size + 2811

React: Bundle Bytes = 0.153 * Source Code Size + 43503

In that analysis, each additional byte of source code increased the bundle size like this:

Svelte’s bundle size grows by 0.493 bytes.

React’s bundle size grows by 0.153 bytes.

However, Svelte started with a much smaller base size of 2,811 bytes. React started with a base size of 43,503 bytes.

The inflection point is when React’s bundle size becomes smaller than Svelte’s as the application grows. Per that same 2019 analysis, you reach this point when your application’s component source code is around 120 KB — a figure the study measured against React 16.

One honest caveat: Svelte is now two major versions past that study, and React is three. Svelte 5 (a ground-up rewrite, released October 2024) and React 19 compile and bundle differently, so the exact constants have shifted. The architecture behind the trade-off hasn’t: Svelte compiles the framework away while React ships a runtime, so for the small-to-medium apps most of us build, Svelte will generally produce smaller bundles and faster load times.

2. Performance

Svelte does less work in the browser. It compiles your components into optimized JavaScript that updates the DOM directly, so there’s no virtual-DOM layer at runtime. React takes an extra step, diffing a virtual DOM before it touches the page. How much that difference matters depends on your app and workload: most sites feel fast in either framework, and the gap shows up mainly in interaction-heavy UIs and on low-end devices.

React has also been narrowing the architectural divide. The React Compiler reached its stable 1.0 release in October 2025, bringing build-time optimization (automatic memoization) to React — a page taken straight from Svelte’s compiler-first playbook.

Choosing for speed? Svelte has the lighter footprint: smaller bundles and direct DOM updates. Just measure your own application before treating any framework comparison as gospel.

3. Learning curve and syntax

Svelte is easy to learn as it uses HTML-like syntax. Developers familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript will find it easy to pick up this framework and begin implementing it.

Here’s what a simple Hello World app looks like in Svelte vs. React.

Svelte’s simplicity and familiar syntax make it approachable, allowing beginners and developers from other backgrounds to learn it quickly. It allows you to write HTML-like code within your JavaScript functions, giving you control over the variables displayed dynamically on your page.

While JSX is powerful and expressive, it can be difficult for new developers to learn.

4. Tools, libraries, and community

React is still the most widely used web framework among developers — 44.7% reported using it in the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey. One honest footnote: while React dominates usage, the same 2025 Stack Overflow survey’s “most admired” ranking puts Svelte first among front-end frameworks, at 62.4% to React’s 52.1%.

Svelte is a newer framework, so its selection of tools and libraries is much smaller in comparison. However, it’s growing quickly.

Per State of JS 2025, 27% of JavaScript developers have used Svelte, and its retention is higher, too: 86% of Svelte users would use it again, versus 72% for React. It’s also a safer long-term bet than its size suggests: Svelte is an MIT-licensed open source project with full-time maintainers, and its sponsor roster includes Vercel, Hugging Face, and Sentry. For now, developers appreciate its simplicity, speed, and small bundle sizes.

6. Scalability

React excels at scaling.

Many developers use it to build big, complicated applications. Its components work together well, and data flows in one direction. The virtual DOM helps it manage information and run smoothly as applications grow.

Svelte is best for small and medium applications.

It’s very fast and efficient because it compiles code beforehand and doesn’t use a virtual DOM, which makes it great for smaller projects. However, Svelte may struggle to handle the demands of extensive and complex applications.

Choosing the right framework

The choice between React and Svelte depends on your project and your team. Here are a few factors to help you choose the best framework.

When to choose React

Choose React for large, complex projects.

React provides a mature and feature-rich framework for these applications. If your team already knows React, they can develop these projects quickly. It offers a solid foundation for ambitious applications.

A large and active community constantly creates libraries and tools for React. These resources can help you solve almost any problem you encounter. React excels at server-side rendering and static site generation. Svelte has an answer here too: the Svelte team maintains SvelteKit, an application framework that handles routing, data loading, and server-side rendering for Svelte apps.

These techniques improve your application’s SEO and performance.

When to choose Svelte

Choose Svelte for small-to-medium-sized applications where performance is critical.

It minimizes bundle sizes and improves loading times, especially for mobile devices.

Svelte’s simplicity and gentler learning curve make it perfect for teams that value developer productivity.

You can enjoy fast development speeds with Svelte. Its compiler-based approach offers the potential for future optimization. This makes Svelte a future-proof choice.

Already have a React app?

If your React app works and your team is productive, staying put is usually the right call.

Svelte and React use different component models, so there’s no drop-in interop. Moving an existing codebase means rewriting its components, retraining the team, and replacing React-specific libraries. That’s a serious investment, and faster runtime performance alone rarely justifies it.

There is a lower-risk way to adopt Svelte incrementally: keep the React app, and reach for Svelte on the next self-contained project — an internal tool, a marketing site, a small service with its own front end. You get a real-world trial of the framework without betting the codebase on it.

Where should you host a Svelte or React app?

Both frameworks leave you with the same two deployment paths. A purely client-side app builds down to static files you can host almost anywhere. Add server-side rendering — Next.js for React, SvelteKit for Svelte — and something has to run your code per request: a Node.js server you control, or a managed platform’s serverless or edge runtime.

Managed platforms like Vercel and Netlify make that second path convenient: connect a Git repository, push, and your app is live. The trade-off is structural. Pricing meters your usage (bandwidth, compute time, builds, requests), so costs scale with traffic, long-running work runs into the platform’s function time limits, and the platform decides what your stack can do.

The alternative is a VPS you control. DreamHost’s Self-Managed VPS plans include a one-click application library alongside full root access and unmetered bandwidth with $0 overage fees, at a flat monthly price that doesn’t change when a launch goes well. Three of those apps map directly onto a JavaScript developer’s workflow:

Node.js: The runtime arrives preinstalled, with the PM2 process manager, Nginx reverse proxy, and SSL preconfigured, so a Next.js app or a SvelteKit app built with its Node adapter runs 24/7 with no cold starts and no function timeouts.

Dokploy: A self-hosted deployment platform that recreates the Heroku- or Vercel-style workflow on your own server. Connect GitHub or GitLab, push, and Dokploy handles builds, databases, and SSL from a visual dashboard.

Docker + Portainer: If your app already ships as a container image, both arrive preconfigured, and Portainer gives you visual management of multi-container stacks.

The library covers back-end pieces, too: PostgreSQL for your relational database (root access lets you add extensions like pgvector if your app has AI features) and Supabase, the open-source Firebase alternative that bundles a database, auth, file storage, and real-time APIs.

Svelte vs. React: the road ahead for web development

React and Svelte each offer powerful advantages for web developers, but neither framework is inherently “better.” It depends on your project’s needs and your team’s comfort level.

React’s maturity and extensive support make it a strong choice for large applications. Svelte’s fresh approach and focus on performance make it ideal for projects prioritizing speed and simplicity.

Web development will likely keep changing. React has already moved this way: the React Compiler reached its stable 1.0 release in October 2025, bringing build-time optimization to React. Svelte might also expand its support network to rival React’s. This exchange of ideas between frameworks often leads to improvements across the board. These improvements ultimately benefit developers no matter their framework preference.

The “Svelte vs. React” discussion highlights the dynamic nature of web development, helping us evaluate our tools and methods and push the boundaries of what we can achieve in web development.

Choose React, Svelte, or another framework altogether. The important thing is that you keep trying new options to improve and optimize your development workflows.

Svelte vs. React FAQs

Is Svelte better than React?

Neither is better across the board. Svelte wins on bundle size, simplicity, and direct DOM updates; React wins on libraries, tooling, and the number of developers who know it. Pick Svelte for smaller apps where load time matters most; pick React for large, complex applications.

Is Svelte faster than React?

Often, but not universally. Svelte compiles components into JavaScript that updates the DOM directly and ships less framework code, skipping the virtual-DOM work React does at runtime. Real-world results depend on your app and workload, so benchmark your own use case.

Should I learn Svelte or React first?

Start with React if you want the framework most teams already use: 44.7% of developers reported using it, versus 7.2% for Svelte, per the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey. Start with Svelte if you want the gentler curve — it builds on plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

What does “svelte” mean?

The word “svelte” means slim and graceful. The framework’s name reflects how it works: it compiles your components at build time and ships lean JavaScript with no framework runtime, so bundles stay small.

What are the best alternatives to Svelte?

React and Vue.js are the most established alternatives, and Angular remains common in enterprises. Solid is Svelte’s closest philosophical neighbor, with fine-grained reactivity and an 89% retention score in State of JS 2025. React is the safest default if third-party library support matters most.

Where can I host a Svelte or React app?

A static build runs on almost any web host or CDN. Server-rendered apps (Next.js, SvelteKit) need a runtime executing code per request: a managed platform’s serverless or edge runtime, or Node.js on a server you control. DreamHost’s Self-Managed VPS offers both Node.js and Dokploy as one-click apps.

  Managed VPS

When You Expect Performance Get DreamHost VPS

Big or small, website or application – we have a VPS configuration for you.

In one corner, there’s fast and efficient Svelte.
