DreamHost & OpenStack: A Match Made In Open Source Heaven

One day soon, most of the world’s Fortune 2000 companies will be running OpenStack software to power their IT clouds and applications.

That’s a huge leap from just over 4 years ago, when OpenStack was born out of the combination of compute controller software written by NASA and distributed storage software created by Rackspace.

OpenStack is now the leading open source cloud computing platform and community worldwide, and it’s adding thousands of code contributors, end users, and supporting companies every year.DreamHost is proud to have played a meaningful role in the IT revolution underway. We’ve always loved open source – using and supporting Linux, WordPress, Ceph and many other open source software tools and applications for our cloud hosting services.

But back in early 2011, we recognized in the fledgling OpenStack community the right mix of ambitious goals, smart programmers, committed companies, and thought leadership that could (and did) make this transformative cloud platform fly. So we jumped in, putting some of our best developers and engineers on the project, and conceiving our own public cloud computing services that we wanted to launch for our entrepreneur and developer customers worldwide.

Our development team members have been leaders on a number of major OpenStack projects, and DreamHost team members have over 1,100 code commits changing over 120,000 lines of OpenStack code. We’ve helped form the OpenStack Foundation to govern and guide this amazing global collaboration, and we’ve represented the community on the Board of Directors since the Foundation’s inception.

Fast-forward to January 2015, and DreamHost was elected by Gold members of the OpenStack Foundation to represent on the Board of Directors for a third year in a row. This speaks to our commitment to the community and the governance of the OpenStack project, as well as direct code contributions. Because after all, it’s the community in open source software that powers progress, and keeping it healthy and thriving is key.

We have also delivered on our promise to offer a world class OpenStack cloud for the next generation of developers to test, develop and launch websites and applications on. DreamObjects offers inexpensive and flexible cloud storage for developers. DreamCompute offers on-tap, secure and performant cloud servers. Developers can now build and launch and scale an application utilizing up to 6 virtual servers for less than $50 per month. The kinds of speed-to-launch and cost efficiencies of the DreamHost Cloud will power faster innovation and enable our developer customers to focus more on their end users’ experience with the application, instead of managing servers and infrastructure.

So our most proud achievement is how we’ve boldly reached into the future for our customers, and brought back a powerful and transformational Cloud platform that is accessible, learnable and useable by budding and accomplished developers alike.

We’re excited to see what Apps are built on our Cloud. And we don’t judge!

So bring on those crazy talking animals.

Really. We love ‘em.

Best,

Simon Anderson
