DreamCon Speaker Series #12: Justin Lund

Speaker:  Justin Lund

Topic:  Intro to DreamObjects

DreamObjects is our new cloud storage product that’s essentially a boundless, web-accessible hard drive.  It’s based on the open source software called Ceph, created by one of the DreamHost founders.  It’s perfect for providing durable storage with near limitless capacity.  Find out how you can use it to speed up your site, backup your data, or create the next big thing and learn about:

  • An overview of object storage and the uniqueness of Ceph.
  • Using DreamObjects for your site with CNAME integration.
  • Using DreamObjects for backing up your site or your hard drive.
  • A quick discussion of compatible third-party applications.
  • Explanations of using the supported APIs.

What do you do at DreamHost?

I’m a product manager, and right now the only product manager.  I’m responsible for setting the direction of products, prioritizing the work of the dev team, and most importantly, understanding our customers’ needs.

What projects do you work on? What do you do on a regular basis?

I primarily work on our cloud products, DreamObjects and DreamCompute.  I’m proud to say both of these products are built on top of open source software – Ceph and OpenStack.

Since I’m in Atlanta and most of the team is in LA, mornings are quiet and I use them to do research: on the status of projects, competitive offerings, industry trends, and feedback on our forums.  Once everyone in LA starts their day, the quietness evaporates and my day turns to meetings, planning, and reporting.  A wonderful pattern of peace and chaos.

What’s one interesting fact we don’t know about you?

I’m a huge fan of cars and love working on them.  I get a great sense of satisfaction from taking care of a car.  Whether it’s simple stuff, like changing the oil and brakes to more complicated work, like replacing the cooling system or suspension, I’ll grab a wrench and do it myself.  If nothing else, it’s a great excuse to buy tools.

What Pandora station are you listening to these days?

I’m one of those strange people who actually still buys their music.  I can never pick a favorite, but lately I’ve been listening to Phoenix, Kid Astray, Passion Pit, Capital Cities, and Atlas Genius.

Where are you going on your next vacation?

I love traveling and my wife and I went to Paris in the Spring.  While the weather was unseasonably cold, the food, the city, the food, and the art certainly made up for it.  And did I mention the food!  We had the best duck confit I’ve ever tasted.

What’s your alma mater?

I’m a Ramblin Wreck from Georgia Tech.  Go Jackets!
