DreamCon Speaker Series #4: Justin Knierim

Come learn how to play nice with MySQL Servers at DreamCon!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to crash an entire MySQL server with your bad queries? Probably not, but the truth is there are many people out there who manage to do just that. I’m sure you don’t want to be one of those misfits who gets an email from support saying, “You’re on the naughty list!” I’m here to do everything in my power to make sure you and Santa stay on good terms,at least as far as MySQL is concerned.

Amongst those of us in Tech Support, I’m the guy people turn to when they need help with MySQL support. As that guy I’m uniquely qualified to help you avoid the pitfalls that less experienced users encounter with MySQL databases.

I’ll show you:

  • How to optimize your database choices when writing a 1 million hit a day super blog!
  • How not to name your databases: “Database1,” “Database2,” and “Database 3;” and instead give them names that are actually useful.
  • How to identify when you have a bad query that’s using up the entire CPU capacity of the server you’re on.
  • And many more useful tips and tricks…

Come venture with me into the land of MySQL, where dolphins roam free! We‘ll make you the best MySQL user you can be!

I manage a team of five awesome support people, wrangle MySQL servers into shape, and still manage to fit in  the occasional game of foosball

What’s one interesting fact we don’t know about you?

I’m tall (6 feet, 5 inches), but horrible at basketball.

Which Big Bang Theory character are you?

My wife says I’m most like Leonard Hofstadter; always well intentioned, but occasionally clueless.

Does bourbon on the rocks count as a cocktail?

Where are you going on your next vacation?

Vacation, what’s that?!? We just welcomed our newborn son to the world, so our next vacation will most likely be quite a ways away
