December 2010 Newsletter

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Happy December 2010 DreamHost Newsletter!

It's cold!

Really cold!

That's not a word you usually associate with sunny Southern California.

Why, just yesterday I stepped outside and I could SEE my breath!

My joints even started aching a little bit.

And today - you will NOT believe this - I saw a guy wearing a sweater.

A sweater!

It's a jungle out there.

One Click Installer: Hugely Upgraded!

Our One-Click software installer has just gotten a bit of an overhaul.

It's leaner and meaner than ever before!

We've broken the apps up into several categories and we've made managing them easier than ever with a refreshed user interface.

What we once called "Easy" software installs are now "Simple".

What we once called "Advanced" are now "Custom". Because that's what they are!

You can even rate the apps you've tried out to let your fellow DreamHostees know how you feel about them.

Developers! You can now submit your own apps to be included with our one-click installer. We'll accept your submissions through the web panel, and if they pass an inspection by our developers and server admins, we'll make them available to ALL of our customers.

Call for Apps!

December is the most popular time of the year to take TIME OFF!

Time off from work, time off from school, time off from hobo-ing... Whatever it is you do, there's a good chance you'll be doing a lot less of it in December.

Which means that, most likely, you're about to find yourself with a lot of free time on your hands.

When you've had enough of family and your DVR runs dry, we'd like you to consider retiring to your room, sitting in front of your computer, and writing the next great web app.

We are now accepting app submissions:

Submit Your App!

If you're a halfway decent developer and you'd like a shot at winning a brand new MacBook Pro, iPod Touch, or Amazon Kindle, now's your chance!

Call for Apps Contest!

You have from NOW until midnight at the end of 2010 (GMT -0800) to submit your app.

We'll make them available (just the good ones, as determined by US!) in early January, after which point your fellow customers will be able to install them, play around with them, and RATE them.

When January's over we'll have our winners. And those winners will soon receive a little post-holiday surprise at their front door.

It may be a flaming bag of poop. Or not. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, eh?

mod_pagespeed Now Available

In early November Google announced a little project of theirs called mod_pagespeed. It's an Apache module (a web server 'add-on') that's designed to make your websites load nearly twice as fast as they did before.

Really, Google just wants the WHOLE WEB to load faster. That's what this module is all about.

Less than 24 hours after mod_pagespeed was made available we had it deployed across our network so that all of our customers could experience a faster way to serve up their websites!

Note that mod_pagespeed is not something that's enabled by default, so you'll need to follow some simple directions to 'flip the switch'. You can learn how in our blog post covering the news:

mod_pagespeed Now Available!

Turning mod_pagespeed back off again is just as easy. So, should you run into any problems along the way - "doopy-boop-boop!" (that's you pressing the off button) - no harm done.

The mod_pagespeed team has been great about addressing any issues that have arisen. And in fact we've silently pushed out several updates to mod_pagespeed over the past month that mitigate or eliminate nearly all of them.

If you checked mod_pagespeed out earlier this month but ran into trouble, feel free to enable it again and see how things go for you.

We'd be interested to hear your feedback on this very exciting, very FREE new feature!

DreamHost 101: Google AdWords Credits!

If you've spent any money with us at all within the past two years, you've most likely earned yourself some Google AdWords credit:

Google AdWords Credit

Contrary to popular belief, you don't NEED to own a business to use Google AdWords. In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion that your blog could use some more readers.

As a matter of fact, I would LOVE to read your awesome blog full of cat pictures and rants about technology, but it's not coming up when I search Google for "awesome blog", "cat pictures", or "rants about technology". I even tried "men in diapers" and "amputee pornography". No go.

You can fix that. Now. Today.

You can obtain your promotional code at:

Goodies / Google AdWords

It's basically free money! Use it!
