February 2013 Newsletter

Introduction

Have you found happiness?

It's a simple question.

You.

You, who have toiled and struggled to bring your dreams into this online world. Are you not the bearer of your own achievements? The champion of your own successes?

Your online dreams - they are yours and yours alone. They have not come to be simply through force of wanting. You've ushered them into this connected world through your own efforts - your own strengths have made them a reality.

Of course, that is not what "they" will say.

Your enemies will seek to discredit you. They'll look for cracks in your foundations into which they'll run roughshod, tossing seeds of doubt into every perceived crevice in the hopes that they may someday blossom into a garden of your undoing.

These seeds will find no purchase, for it is YOU that will rise; YOU who will stand strong.

And who have you to thank for your successes?

Not DreamHost. Surely not! DreamHost is simply a passage through which the vessel of your own ingenuity has sailed.

Should you thank the government? Surely not! The government plays no part in your innovations. Their role begins and ends at steeling the front door to your own brilliance.

YOU and you alone are the reason for your success. Cat sweaters are exactly that - cat sweaters - and nothing more. You have identified the market need with many late nights of research. You have knitted the sweaters with your own two calloused hands. You have built the online store in which to sell these sweaters and your bank account has prospered.

You now benefit from the inventions of your own mind, the products of your own hands, and the fruits of your own toil.

And so I ask again.

Have you found happiness?

If the answer is yes, then all is as it should be.

If the answer is no, then all is as it should be.

If this is confusing, don't worry. I don't really understand Objectivism, either.

Simon Says... (Written by CEO Simon Anderson!)

DreamHost is forging ahead with our 2013 plans, and I hope you are, too! February is always the time that some of our new year's resolutions can start to lose some steam, and it takes lots of personal resilience and focus to stay the course. That applies whether you're on a fitness regime or healthier lifestyle plan, or building or upgrading your blog or business website, or in our case, completing some major investments and enhancements in our systems and infrastructure.

The great news on our front is that we've just completed our goal to decommission a legacy data center in Southern California near LAX, and migrate all services in the LAX location to one of our other California data centers in Irvine or Los Angeles, or to our new world class data center in Ashburn, Virginia. This milestone, combined with 80% completion of the upgrades to all of our server hardware for shared hosting and virtual private servers (VPS), means a big overall increase in performance and reliability for customers, no matter where you are in the world.

We've also been hyper focused on super fast WordPress upgrades to get security patches in place - the last upgrade in January (3.5.1) was made available to customers within seconds of DreamHost receiving it, and our auto upgrades proceeded quickly for those that have that feature enabled.

Next up for us is an expansion of DreamObjects features (can't say what yet, but watch the Panel for details in the next month), and a whole lot of new monitoring and system-level enhancements that you likely won't see directly, but that leverage the latest open and closed source systems tools, and will continue to speed up our ability to identify and resolve any systems issues before they occur.

Best,
Simon

(Now back to Brett!)

DreamScape is Here!

Blogs are great - but their popularity is waning.

In fact, we just killed ours; we didn't think anyone would notice.

Eventually the guilt overtook us and we were forced to bring it back to life.

We ripped off its shirt (whaaaaat), attached the paddles, stepped back, and let 'er rip.

As soon as our blog kicked back online we got all up in its face and started shouting "WHAT DID YOU SEE?!"

Then we stepped back, confused, and asked "What...what happened to you?"

The DreamHost Blog is now "DreamScape" - an online community built around tips, tricks, and tutorials that'll help you make the most out of your online experience with DreamHost!

Visit DreamScape!

Whether you're an entrepreneur, a software developer, a blogger, or anything in-between, we're pretty sure you'll find something useful on DreamScape.

That's partly because it won't be just ME that's writing articles for a change. With DreamScape we're drawing on the vast well of talent that exists within DreamHost to write about things within our own areas of expertise.

Our developers will write articles about Perl and Python!

Our tech support team will address some of the most commonly-seen customer issues!

Our HR team will not only let you know who is sleeping with whom at DreamHost, but they'll also tell you exactly how much money we all make!

And YOU will get to write content about whatever you feel like! That's right - DreamScape also accepts user-submitted content!

If you think you've got a voice for these things, and hopefully a brain to back it up, DreamScape could be just what your genius needs to begin infecting a wider audience.

Specifically, we're looking for content that is unique to the DreamHost user experience. Whatever your passion is, we want to share it too!

Maybe you can explain why freezing Ruby Gems is a good idea in a way that's never been done before - in words that make sense to programmers and normals alike!

Or maybe you've tested a handful of WordPress ecommerce plugins in your quest to set-up shop online and want to do a roundup of them all!

Whatever your calling may be, we want you to get it out of your system and into the system of everyone else on the Internet! Sign up today!

Or just keep refreshing Twitter. We cater to ADD, too.

DreamObjects - Out of Beta!

When we first announced DreamObjects in September of last year, we had a plan. The plan was that we'd throw it out there in beta for a few months and give ourselves a little while to work out all the kinks.

Well the joke's on us - there were no kinks! At least none worth mentioning. We spent a lot of the past few months capturing a snapshot of data about who and what would eventually use our incredible new(ish) cloud storage service, and how we could provide the best possible service levels.

DreamHost: DreamObjects

Good news to report this month - DreamObjects is MATURE! Deep voice, bad skin, hair down there - the works!

Late last month we removed the "BETA" tag from DreamObjects - it's now available to the world at large, and you can use it with confidence that the world's only Ceph-backed S3 competitor can handle your data gently, yet with respect, and in a manner that pleases you.

You can store data on DreamObjects starting at $0.07 per GB per month and the more you store, the cheaper it gets - all the way down to $0.044 per GB for the heaviest users!

Remember, DreamObjects was designed to be API compatible with Amazon S3 and OpenStack Object Storage, so in many cases it's a drop-in replacement for many of your web apps and will immediately drop your cost of doing business.

Or storing cat pictures.

DreamCon, a third word that starts with Dream!

Last month we announced DreamCon - the very first DreamHost user conference!

DreamCon 2013

DreamCon will be two intense days in August full of classes taught by DreamHost employees (and partners!) to help you get the most out of your DreamHost experience. It'll take place mere minutes from the DreamHost offices (as the elevator flies) in Los Angeles.

Speakers and a full agenda are coming soon, but really, that stuff is just a formality. You and I both know how incredible and life-affirming this whole experience will be.

Socially awkward? Don't worry - so are we! We promise to not look you in the eye or start any conversations unless you approach us first. We want this to be as comfortable as possible for all of us!

Super-early bird pricing on tickets won't be available for much longer, so get in while you still can!

DreamCon 2013

Affiliate Bonuses - EXTENDED!

Being a DreamHost affiliate is every bit as amazing as being a ballerina on a unicorn in July.

We pay you $97 for each new customer that you send our way, and there ain't nothin' in the world feels better than seein' them thar affiliate receipts once they start bangin' your inbox.

DreamHost Affiliates

But wait! Things are a little sweeter than you may have realized.

Through the end of March we've extended some bonuses to ALL of our affiliates - an extra $50 and $100 that're yours for the taking!

If you've got any questions about these bonuses, or about our affiliate program in general, just write to affilliates@dreamhost.com. We employ REAL PEOPLE to write REAL EMAILS to help you maximize your affiliate performance - REALLY!

DreamHost WTF: DreamHost Status

What's That Feature? It's DreamHost Status!

Something's wrong. Your site is...acting strangely.

You're not happy about it. In fact, you're hopping mad. Literally, you're hopping from foot to foot and smoke is coming out of your ears. It'd be funny if only you weren't "loosing" so much business.

You're not sure who to be mad at - DreamHost or yourself. At this point, your first troubleshooting step should be a visit to...

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/

DreamHost Status is where we keep you informed about all upcoming maintenance issues - both planned and unplanned! Network improvements, hardware replacements, major software upgrades...any type of activity that would affect a large amount of our customers gets thrown up there for the world to see!

And we leave it up there, long after what many companies would consider reasonably prudent.

We don't have to do any of that, of course. But we also don't have to pet kittens and tell our parents we love them. We do it because it's just the right thing to do.
