DreamHost July Newslettery

Hello.

I am a duck.

DreamHost hired me to write the July newsletter.  The other guy wasn’t avail…hey is that bread?

It’s not?  Oh, okay.  I thought I saw bread in your pocket.  My bad.

Anyway the other guy wasn’t feeling up to it so they went looking for a duck to fill in this month.  Why?  I don’t know.  But I was promised bread.

So let’s talk hosting.  Do you have any idea how many small, independent bakeries host their sites with DreamHost?  Lots.  It would blow your mind.  I’ve looked into it.  There is no shortage of bread all across this country, that’s for ducking sure. Except for…actually, right here.  Right now.  I don’t see any bread anywhere around us, which is strange, right?

I feel like I smell it, though.  Are you sure you don’t have any bread? Nothing on you?  Because if you did have bread I’d be totally cool with it.  That’s your bread.  I’m just a duck.  It’s fine, really.

What’s cool about DreamHost is how many tools they give you to indulge your online passions, and how many pictures of bread they actually host.

Case in point: I’m building an “enthusiast” site on top of DreamObjects now called BreadPics.  Like-minded ducks will be able to login and, for a modest monthly fee, view bread photos of all kinds.  The kneading, the baking…the eating…heh heh.  That part’s the best.  You feel me?

Yeah you do.  It’s going to take the duck community by storm.

Okay so one last time – I swear.  Are you absolutely certain you don’t have any bread on you right now?

*mmmf mfff Hey! What the? Duck!*

Uh oh, folks, gotta run. Sounds like Brett broke loose.  If you come across any bread, fresh or stale, hit me up at the lake.  Toodles!

Hey guys, this is Brett.  I’m really sorry.  I was eating a sandwich at the park and the next thing I know I woke up in a maintenance shed with a huuuuge lump on the back of my head.  I’m fine now.  A little hungry, though.

Hey, does anyone have any like…sandwiches?  Or even just the bread?

No?

Really?  No bread?  Dang.

*Unzips Brett costume to reveal another duck.*

It was worth a shot.

*waddles off*

5. DreamHost WTF: One-Click Installer

What’s That Feature?  It’s our One-Click Installer!

There are a lot of great web apps out there.  And I don’t just mean any web apps.

I’m talking about free, open-source apps that make your life simpler and make your days easier.

Using them is a dream!  Installing them…is not.  If you’ve never messed around on a command line or futzed with database settings before, it can be pretty intimidating to get a lot of these things up and running.

That’s why we’ve chosen a few of the web’s most popular apps *cough*WordPress*cough* to live in our one-click installer.  Leave the legwork to us! Select an app and we’ll get everything up and running for you – all through the same control panel you’ve come to know and love:

https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=goodies.installer

I cannot tell a lie.  WordPress is the most popular app in our catalog. By a lot.

But did you know that you can run your OWN Wikipedia?  Install MediaWiki!  (I tried, but someone kept replacing the Brett entry with butts.)

Add discussion forums to your website!  The very popular phpBB bulletin board system is just a click away!

Once installed, we’ll even notify you when app updates are available. We can automatically install those for you, or just let them sit there growing stagnant and moldy as critical security patches pass you by.

Whatevs!

6. DreamHost Site Of The Month

The DreamHost Site Of The Month is a coveted title reserved for one truly outstanding website that tickles our fancy on any given month.

It’s a tough job, but each month we pore through tweets tagged with the #DreamHostSOTM hashtag and pick our favorite.

What’s our criteria?  We just don’t know.  Some days we’re in bad moodsand your site is all about the opposite.  Some days we feel like dancing and your site gets us groovin’.  It’s sort of a moving target.  Enter and you’ll have a pretty good chance of winning.

This month’s site of the month iiiiiis….

http://www.jensnyderphoto.com/

Jen Snyder, Family Photographer

“Jen Snyder is family photographer specializing in helping Moms see the unconditional love their children have for them.”

Jen’s portfolio made us smile.  Kids are cute.  Kids love their parents. Parents love their kids.  It’s a rare gift to be able capture all that on film and Jen does it beautifully.

Congratulations, Jen!

If you’d like your site to be considered as a site of the month and potentially be mentioned in this very…unique newsletter, just TWEET your site’s URL(s) with the #DreamHostSOTM hashtag.  We’ll search through all the entries at the end of the month and arbitrarily assign a winner to the one site that tickles our fancies the most.

See ya next month!
